this picture makes me laugh
i was trying to tease the toy out of his mouth so we could go for a walk, even though i know better.
a couple of weeks ago, the vet called to check on atlas. when i told her that he was still limping, she wanted to put him back in the splint for a week. i said no, but i did agree to a few days of inactivity.
during his inactivity – which, i should mention, he opposed – i asked someone else to watch atlas walk so i could get a second opinion on the limp, just in case i was imagining things.
he figured it out!
while atlas was in the splint, he developed a habit of stomping the splinted foot extra-hard against the ground.
(he has a habit of marching in place so whenever he stood in front of the counter at the pet store, he looked like he was stomping his foot impatiently. it was pretty cute.)
it turned out that the habit stuck. when atlas walked, he was still stomping that foot extra-hard against the ground. as a result, that front leg/shoulder wasn’t moving the same as the other leg/shoulder and it resembled a limp.
boy was i relieved.
we’re still increasing our distance; in another few weeks, life should be back to normal again.

oh good news!
that boy is adorable.
This is great news, Elizabeth! Glad all is well… And I can image how cute that stomp! ;o) Happy Day ((HUGS))
That picture makes me laugh too! Good for you for not putting the splint back on…poor thing.. hope he’s back to normal soon!
I’m glad that all is well with Atlas. It must be if stomping his injured leg does not hurt him.
It looks like he does the same thing that my Nikki does when she get excited. She picks up a toy and runs around with it. At dinner time, she will start barking at me to hurry up until I tell her to “go get your ball”. She gets it, then tosses it in the air or bounces it on the floor until dinner is ready.
That’s so cute! I would like to see it.
That was his “You’re home! I’m so excited! I will put this in my mouth so I don’t bite you!” thing. He only drops it when he’s no longer nippy, no matter how much I pull.
What a smart boy!
Jerry: Yes. I think that all is well. I let him run off-leash the other day for the very first time. He was happy. I was slightly panicky. Hopefully that wears off soon.
Kate: Thanks! He is! I’m just taking it slow and steady since we were so still for so long.
Tracy: Thank you! Me too. I am very happy.
Tammy: He really is.
Good news! You’re so adorable, Atlas. Clara would love to play with you.
I also love this photo! What a ham! It occurred to me the reason he may have been “limping” is even though the cast was off he was still compensating for the cast as if it were still there. I remember doing that after I broke my ankle. But Atlas is such a cool dog and a quite character that who knows what his mind is thinking. I had a dog like Atlas and I miss him terribly.
Silly Atlas!! I can just see him stomping his foot, though. Very cute!
JoJo gives me that same look. She has her ball in her mouth and is just begging me to play with her. But then when I put my hands on the ball, she gives me the “don’t take my toy!!” look.
