the story of the milky way

May 16, 2012

when we were in madrid, we went to the prado museum. my favorite paintings were the ones that depicted myths and legends. not because of the paintings themselves, i must confess, but because i was captivated by the stories.

i love myths and legends. i always have. some of them were old favorites, but some were new.

want to hear my absolute favorite story?

hercules was the son of zeus (the king of the gods) and the nymph alcmene. alcmene was mortal, so hercules was mortal when he was born. in order to make his son immortal, zeus held baby hercules to his wife hera’s breast while she was asleep. when she woke up and saw a strange baby at her breast, she pulled away and the spurting breast milk formed the milky way.

isn’t that the best story! as soon as i read it, i ran around the wing looking for helen so i could tell it to her immediately.

i cannot see the milky way now without thinking about that story.

  1. Science is good, but I’d much rather think about the Milky Way via this story than a gazillion particles going bang in the sky… I’ll take myths and legends and beautiful stories too. ;o) Happy Day, Elizabeth ((HUGS))

    i agree with tracy!
and i shall now always think of hera and baby hercules when i see the milky way.
oh elizabeth… as your friend how i wish i had lots of money. much money! one of the things i would do is open your picklewich shoppe!
there could be your art on the walls and tiny white fairy lights strung across the ceiling and you would have the best picklewiches and tell enchanting stories of your own and others on special evenings… oh to think of it. wouldn’t that be fun!!!
and atlas of course could be there if he wanted to … as official greeter!

tammy: i LOVE your vision! and who knows, maybe it will happen someday! p.s. atlas would insist on being there, especially once he realized it was a place with food. 😉

tracy: i agree. science can be interesting, but there’s nothing quite like a good story.

  4. Oh dear, I did put you in my reader, but for some reason the posts are not showing up…. so I am behind. Can’t catch up now, but soon!!

patty: i am investigating! soon, i hope. :)

jerry: he is happily napping in his crate. you can be sure that he is not missing my camera and wondering when it will be fixed. 😉
