a visit to the alhambra

May 22, 2012

when we were walking through the summer palace at the alhambra, my sister teased me about my absorption in a patch of yellow flowers in the garden when to my left was a view of the alhambra. it got me thinking about the photos that i like to take.

when i am visiting somewhere new, my favorite photos are often ones that are not necessarily pictorial representations of that particular place. people who are watching me take photos will often comment that i could have taken those photos anywhere. i suppose that’s true, but when i see them, they bring back the place and the moment to me in a way that photos of the place itself often cannot.

really, i want to capture the feeling or the essence of the place. that’s what helps me remember it long after i return. that’s what helps me remember how i felt when i was there.

in the alhambra, those feelings included beauty and inspiration and awe.

very unique way of remembering a place in time and space.
i think the artistic way of remembering.
the rest of us just take the shot that could be on a post card down the street. lol!
but the first shot really is beautiful too.
i think my favorite is the third…
the sunlight through the gate. lovely.

  3. Enjoying these photos even if I don’t always have time to comment!

One of my fave photos of Seattle is of a corner of the pool at the motel we stayed at. The light was just right, sort of Hockney-esque. It’s a bit grainy since it was film and fairly dark out but I still really like it. Nothing about it says “Seattle” though. 😉

  4. More and more I think that the photos we take are better reflections of who we are than any mirror could ever give.

  5. Wow. These are amazingly beautiful. I love the doorway through a doorway through a doorway through a doorway. I also love that you take the photos that remind you of the experience you want to remember. And I love that they’re such beautiful photos, and that you share them with us!!

  6. bookmarked!!, I really like your blog!
